Starting

A consumable for sustained HP regen in the laning stage. Helps you trade your HP with enemy heroes and heal back up without having to go to fountain. Provides double HP regen when eating a tree planted using an Iron Branch.
A consumable for a burst of HP. Especially useful to surprise enemies when you are at low health to survive an engagement. Also provides some useful damage in the laning stage.
The most cost efficient stats item in Dota 2. Useful in the laning stage to have an HP, mana, and damage advantage against enemy heroes. Can be used together with a Tango for double HP regen.

Early Game

An early game pick up that helps you get through the laning stage with more stats. The mana regen is particularly useful when your hero spams spells for farming and fighting.
Start with Magic Stick if you expect high frequency of spells from enemy heroes on the lane.
A core item to rush even before boots in the early game. Improves your kill threat, farm rate, and push potential by doing damage in an AoE and stunning enemy units. The tick damage also helps proc Cold Snap on enemy heroes. Also lets you do more damage with your spells and resolves your mana issues, while massively improving your mana pool and providing effective right click damage through stats.
A core item to increase your movement speed and have more mobility when farming creeps or running towards power runes. Gets upgraded to Boots of Travel later in the game.

Mid Game

A core item to root an enemy hero and set up your Tornado and follow up spell combo as well as hammer. Also makes you significantly more tanky and provides damage and mana pool through stats. Builds into Gleipnir later in the game.
A core item that lets you choose one of three upgrades based on Quas, Wex, and Exort. You can only choose the upgrade once for the entire game and cannot switch it later. Boosts the level of either Quas, or Wex, or Exort by one, based your selected upgrade. The Exort upgrade provides Cataclysm, which works best with sources of AoE lockdown on your team. Wex upgrades Tornado, while Quas upgrades Ice Wall.
A core item that lets you choose one of three upgrades based on Quas, Wex, and Exort. You can only choose the upgrade once for the entire game and cannot switch it later. The Wex upgrade improves EMP to pull heroes towards it and burn more mana, and is your most powerful upgrade. The Quas upgrade lets you do the AoE damage of Ice Wall around you during Ghost Walk, which works well with your level 10 talent. The Exort upgrade improves Sun Strike to summon a Forge Spirit every time it connects with an enemy hero. The Cataclysm double Sun Strikes summons two Forge Spirits in this manner.
A core Boots of Speed upgrade for better mobility, farm efficiency, and split push potential while keeping your kill threat all across the map.
An upgrade for Rod of Atos to lockdown multiple enemy heroes and improve the AoE on all your spells. Makes you much more tanky and provides mana pool and damage through stats.

Late Game

A core item that maintains your kill threat and split push potential on the map more often by reducing the cooldown of all your spells and items.
A late game pick to have two rounds of your devastating spell combo and do massive damage in teamfights. Particularly useful with the Exort Aghanim`s Scepter to cast Cataclysm and massive Meteors twice. Also has great synergy with the level 25 radial Defeaning Blast talent.
A core item to close the gap on enemy heroes and burst them down with your spell combo. Has great synergy with Scythe of Vyse to initiate and instantly disable an enemy hero.
A core item in the late game for reliable lockdown against elusive enemy heroes to burst them down quickly with your spell combo. Has great synergy with Blink Dagger to catch and kill an enemy hero while they are Hexed.

Situational

An alternative to Rod of Atos in the early game to boost your farming speed and scale towards the late game with items. Also boosts your attack speed to proc Cold Snap with damage instances on enemy heroes.
A situational item that improves your impact in teamfights with auras and also gives you more DPS with right clicks.
A situational item that boosts your right click damage through stats and attack speed to proc Cold Snap with damage instances on enemy heroes. The true strike also helps against evasion on enemy heroes. Builds into Parasma later in the game.
An upgrade for Witch Blade to decrease the magic resistance of enemy heroes through right clicks and do more damage with spells. Also improves your tankiness and massively increases your attack speed and damage through stats. Has great synergy with Alacrity to massively increase your damage output with right clicks.
A mid game pick up to avoid most disables and silences on the enemy team to get off your spell combo as well as stand your ground and hit freely in fights. Also improves your right click damage and tankiness through HP pool and magic resistance.
A powerful defensive tool to block single target disables and debuffs. Also provides effective damage through stats for universal heroes.
A defensive item to survive enemy initiations and turn the fight with all your spells.
